Obama now “outraged” by Wright’s comments

The AP reported a few hours ago:

Democrat Barack Obama said Tuesday he was outraged and appalled by the latest comments from his former pastor, who asserted that criticism of his fiery sermons is an attack on the black church and the U.S. government was responsible for the creation of the AIDS virus.

The presidential candidate is seeking to tamp down the growing fury over Rev. Jeremiah Wright and his incendiary remarks that threaten to undermine his campaign.

"I am outraged by the comments that were made and saddened by the spectacle that we saw yesterday," Obama told reporters at a news conference.

After weeks of staying out of the public eye while critics lambasted his sermons, Wright made three public appearances in four days to defend himself. The former pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago has been combative, providing colorful commentary and feeding the story Obama had hoped was dying down. …
The rest of the AP story is here.

Comments:

I’ll bet many of you are old enough to remember when those comments that have “outraged “ Sen. Obama were just little “snippets.”

Now they’re all grown up and threatening “to undermine his campaign.”

So Obama has switched from saying he could never “disown” Wright to throwing him under the bus.

Obama’s not called “the change candidate” for nothing.

Since Obama made his remarks in Winston-Salem which is just down the road from Durham, I wonder if Obama used the same bus Duke used to throw its lacrosse team under when Crystal Mangum and Mike Nifong began telling lies?

More soon.

I am much more conservative than Mr. Obama, except in one important respect.

Mr. Obama retains the distinction of being virtually the only major political figure to caution that Duke students accused of serious crimes were entitled to due process.

This stand took considerable personal and political courage, because of the large activist black culture which does NOT care to wait for fair process to determine the ultimate facts.

Recall Duke Professor Houston Baker's contemporary comment that the presumption of innocence was just "silly sentamentalism". The comment was met with ringing silence from the Brodhead Administration.

Recall the behavior of prominent activists from Jesse Jackson to the North Carolina NCAAP to Duke Professor Waneema's comment that "white innocence is black guilt".

Over the major issue I am on this blog, I could readily sit down over a cup of coffee with Mr. Obama, as I could with just a handful of others of a wide range of political views, including of course JinC.

Mr. Obama would have us believe he first became aware of the lunatic pastor's wacko ideas when Wright appeared at the National Press Club on Monday. Wright said the same ridiculous and obnoxious things at the Press Club as he has been saying at Trinity Church of Christ in Chicago for over twenty years. Mr. Obama's supporters are raising a strawman argument saying that Wright's statements do not reflect Mr. Obama's campaign. Nobody has ever said that. What critics have said is that Mr. Obama apparently sat in that "church" for twenty years listening to Wright's garbage without raising an eyebrow. The question isn't about his current campaign, but if Mr. Obama disagrees with these lunatic thoeries, why has he waited two decades to reject them? Does he think we're all as stupid as the congregants of Trinity Church of Christ?

John,

What Barack did today was very painful! I'm offended by your lack of respect! Imagine how you felt when you were outed by someone you trusted! It is a very devastating thing to give up one's church! Please show the same respect that you would want from others!

John -

Good post, and ditto to TarheelHawkeye. I might, I agree with the "Reverend" Wright on one point: Obama is being a good politician; just saying the things he needs to say to get elected. I also wonder what Obama was doing in church for twenty or so years. Was he praying, in which case how does he differ from the embittered folks in the rural parts of Pennsylvania, or was he just reading the backs of his eyelids as Wright ranted on?

Jack-
Obama is a typical politician. Never to be trusted until verified.
No way he didn't know all about Wright's views about America.
This will be Obama's downfall.

Last year I found the letter BO wrote, and it was just a politician’s lip service to gain voters.

There have been posts that say Obama would not embarrass Democrats all the way up to the governor, and would not draw further notice to the Blacks that went blindly off the deep end.

He needs these people, and the state political machine for assistance.

Unless there are two letters, this idea that Obama wrote this important letter, is one of those ‘Urban Legends.’

John, can you find Obama’s letter and reprint it here?

John,

In all fairness, why can't you post my point of view? This is onesidedness! Is that how you view the world, your side & no one else?

Thank you!

This whole episode is hilarious in several ways.

1.) Obama would have us believe that for twenty years, the only time Wright acted like a nut was when he, Obama, had stepped out of the room.

2.) Obama's defense is to equivocate between Wright and other black churches, basically to portray ALL black churches as nuts in order for his to not look so bad.

3.) It's all more or less okay with Obama - until Wright outs him for pandering, THEN he's suddenly full of outrage.

4.) Obama not only tossed Wright under the bus, he completely condemned yesterday's speech before the National Press Club, the same speech that had the CNN talking heads falling all over themselves in praise, even calling it a brilliant VINDICATION of Wright and by extension Obama. (The extent to which Rick Sanchez, Soledad O'Brien and Roland Martin were in disconnect with reality in doing their spin cannot be overstated, which makes Obama's trashing the speech all the more sweet.)

5.) The most hilarious is that in all likelihood Wright KNOWS darn well that Obama is lying about not having been present for controversial sermons, and now has good reason to out Obama on this lie.

I don't know if we can go that far.

Is there any real proof (excepting a comment written by an anonymous commentator Sceptical on the blogs) that Obama wrote or said anything positive about the lacrosse case? I have not seen or heard any definitive proof so far. Can someone, perhaps Sceptical, provide us some proof? Or, was this too just another fabrication?

To Anonymous at 10:37 -

I was just pointing out the contradictions in Obama's statements; he decried people who pray, but what pray tell was he doing in Trinity Church for twenty years? Not praying? Then he said (I think) that he was unfamiliar with what the good "Reverend" Wright had ranted about. Again, what was he doing in Trinity Church for twenty years? Not listening to the good "Reverend" Wright's rants? I can only conclude that if he was not prarying and not listening to the good "Reverend" Wright rants, then he must have been reading the backs of his eyelids (i.e., sleeping).

And to Anonymous at 10 AM. Check KC Johnson's comments at Durham-in-Wonderland. KC says that Obama did indeed say something positive about the Lacrosse case. Now, while I find KC's support of Obama to be odd (and to be getting odder by the day) I nonetheless have always found KC to be honest and accurate. So, I think you can pretty much put that doubt to rest.

That Wright would out Obama on that front?

Wright's comments over the past week outing Obama leads me to believe otherwise. The guy is a loose cannon and it didn't look like an accident when he made those comments about Barack.

Or that Obama was in attendance for those sermons? There's a writer for Newsmax who swears he has been attending and saw Obama there.

We'll see though. Obama is already badly wounded, and the Rezko and Ayers stuff still hasn't been fleshed out in the MSM.
