Haditha Case Implodes

Last May 18, one of the liberal/leftist MSM’s favorites, Democrat John Murtha, accused U. S. Marines in Iraq of murdering civilians.

From a tape of Chris Matthews show that night:

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Let me ask you Mr. Murtha to give us some details about that. Draw us a picture of what happened at Haditha.

REP. JOHN “JACK” MURTHA: Well, I’ll tell you exactly what happened. One Marine was killed and the Marines just said we’re going to take care – they don’t know who the enemy is, the pressure was too much on them, so they went into houses and they actually killed civilians. And, and –

MATTHEWS:—was this My Lai? Was this a case of – when you say cold blood Congressman, a lot of people think you’re basically saying you got some civilians sitting in a room around a field and they’re executed. Just on purpose…

MURTHA: That’s exactly it. This was not an action…this was troops…they were so stressed out…
Month-by-month since last May the charges Murtha and some others recklessly and eagerly made have been disproved.

You can read about what should be the final implosion at this post by Michelle Malkin who started questioning the Haditha story from day one.

Now that Murtha and some other Democrats have been exposed as sliming U. S. Marines, do you think those Senate Democrats who've been going after Rush Limbaugh will say anything critical of Murtha and the others?

I don't.

Hat tips to Malkin and Mike Williams who also started questioning the Haditha lies from day one.

And thank you U. S. Marines. You're great and don't deserve some of the political leaders you risk your lives protecting.

And I'm fairly certain a Marine is suing Murtha for defamation. There should be multiple suits and he should be ruined for what he had done. Defamation is bad but to do it to those risking their lives for us is beyond words.

Meanwhile, there is effort to silence Duke's really esteemed faculty. Don't let it happen!

Dear Editor: I was surprised to read Emeritus Professor Holsti's
letter yesterday, and Chemistry Chairman Warren's e-letter of
support. Castigating Duke students for underage drinking, the only
possible illegal act that occurred at that off campus party held in
March 2006 (aside from the filing of a fraudulent rape complaint)
should also I suggest be balanced by their public recognition that
some of their colleagues and former colleagues in their departments
and in Arts and Sciences have in the past taken, manufactured, and
sold illegal drugs, illegally smuggled alcohol into North Carolina,
sexually harassed and assaulted undergraduate students, graduate
students, and staff members both male and female, mishandled and
misappropriated federal funds, published student research as their
own work, committed adultery, cohabitated(!), attempted to murder a
sitting judge, etc.. A conversation with the University Counsel, who
keeps some of such records (associated with verified complaints
against current faculty members), might lead faculty to a bit more
unwillingness to cast (as President Brodhead termed them)
"ill-advised" stones.

I came late to the Haditha story and I regret that - although I remember when Murtha said the Marines had committed "cold blooded murder". At the time I spent most of my available reading time, here, at liestoppers and DIW. The Duke case sucked up most of my pyschic energy. But even with that I knew what an assault on due process and fairness that statement at that time was.

I am glad the Marines that have been exonerated have been exonerated. I don't consider the lessening of charges for Wuternich to be just or to be a victory. It seems to me the military is imposing a civilian law enforcement standard on combat operations - and that is neither just nor does it bode well for effectiveness of our fighting forces. Basically we are criminalizing battlefield behavior and decision making in what we used to call in the Air Force a "ground speed zero critique".

Did SSgt Wuternich overreact at Haditha? I don't know because I don't know enough about ground combat. Should SSgt Wuternich lead men in combat again? Maybe , maybe not. But what I do know is that if SSgt Wuternich comes out of this with a FELONY record - it will be a supreme injustice IMO - whether he ever spends a day in jail or not.
