Alaska’s Stevens wins GOP primary

The AP reported a few hours ago:

Even though he's facing federal charges, Ted Stevens remains feisty as ever. The 84-year-old Republican handily won his primary race for Senate and immediately proclaimed the November election a "piece of cake."

That's despite some major hurdles Stevens faces in the next few months.

Stevens has a September trial that will keep him off the campaign trail for weeks, and he's up against his toughest opponent in his 40 years in office: popular Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich.

Stevens won the race Tuesday with 63 percent of the vote, beating six other opponents, including his closest competitor Dave Cuddy by more than 35 percentage points.

Begich easily won the Democratic primary over two minor challengers with 91 percent of the vote.
I was hoping Stevens would lose the primary.

I wish the same. He is a huge embarrassment the party just does not need right now.

One good thing about this Stevens mess is that is shows that a lot of Republicans/conservatives try to practice some political hygiene. Stevens has been taking hits from the Right and he deserves to take abuse from any direction.

Republicans are also not too thrilled about Larry "Wide Stance" Craig and other assorted crooks and hypocrites in our midst.

I wish the Left would be a little more diligent about their own embarrassing figures rather than "circling the wagons" or screaming "McCarthyism" or otherwise employing situational ethics.

Let's see . . .

1. What's with the crook with $90K in his freezer. Is he still around?
2. Nice to see Sen. Kennedy make an appearance at the convention. Glad his surgery went well but his career should have ended in 1969.
3. How about Gerry Studds, also of Massachusetts. Had sex with an underage page and got reelected many times. He was censured on the House floor and complained that he was being harrassed for being gay.
4. Now, the Dem VP is a serial plagiarist. How odd that one of his big issues has been download theft of music -- the theft of the intellectual endeavors of others.
5. And finally, we have the One who associates with an admitted and unapologetic domestic terrorist. Ayers is a left wing equivalent of Tim McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber. The only difference is that McVeigh was unfortunately more competent than the Weather Underground.

Let's turn the tables . . . what would happen to . . .

1. Republicans who took bribes?
2. A drunk Republican who drowned someone in his car and called his lawyer before he called to help the victim?
3. A GOP house member who boffed his underage page? (NOTE: There was a parallel GOP scandal at the same time as the Studds scandal. His name was Dan Crane and the voters in his district had the good sense to throw him out when he did not do the right thing and resign.)
4. A GOP VP nominee who plagiarized multiple times?
5. A GOP Pres nominee who hung out with Tim McVeigh and Joseph Mengele?
