Commenters on Al Gore, Global Warming, Weather, etc.

There's a lot of smart commentary on the thread of Daily Tech Has Ice News For Al Gore, His Nobel Committee, the BBC.

Here's the money graf from Daily Tech’s report:

Thanks to a rapid rebound in recent months, global sea ice levels now equal those seen 29 years ago, when the year 1979 also drew to a close.
DT's report's drawn comments I’m posting here in part or whole in italics with my comments interspersed in plain.

There have been climate swings throughout the history of this globe. The most recent warming period, known as the Medieval Warming (800-1300 Anno Domini), took place well before coal-fired generators or GMC SUVs.

For a "scientist" to claim that climate change is anthropogenic and that carbon is evil defies logic and proves what many real scientists have concluded: Al Gore's ideas have evolved into a cult. A good source of hard fact is the book "Unstoppable Global Warming."

I was disappointed but not surprised when McCain bought into the global warming myth. I guess he got a mental hernia by bending over backwards to prove he's bipartisan.

McCain did do a lot of bending over backwards, but his Dem and media "friends and admirers" always stayed on course.

So when "Mac" attacked Republicans, they praised him; when he made a few qualified criticisms of then Senator Obama or looked like he had a chance of getting elected, they savaged him. Example: The NYT’s bogus story claiming he’d had an affair with a lobbyist Vicki Iseman who’s now suing the Times.

An increase in sea ice? How much you want to bet that this will be presented as more proof of man made global warming, or as it is now called "climate change"?

I'll bet not a penny because you’re right.

When I was a kid, we recognized there were changes in climatic conditions, from hour to hour, day to day, year to year and so forth. We called it weather.

Yes, weather. I remember when people used to read about it in the Bible. There were floods, droughts, etc.; but no SUV’s or coal-fired plants.

And no Al Gore or “settled science,” either.

Grafton had two observations:

1.) This type of report will get very little,if any, play in the MSM. The average man on the street heard all about the polar icecaps melting but will hear next to nothing about their re-freezing.

You're so right. And most people won’t know what they’re missing

2.) This global warming nonsense is the type of thinking we as a society have when we replace God with man as the center of the universe. It's just like the middle ages when everyone thought the universe revolved around the earth or the earth was flat. To believe mankind's actions are paramount to the temperature of the planet is just as ludicrous.

One more observation: I'm constantly amazed by people who confuse and combine global warming and pollution issues.

There are sure a lot of those confused people. I think they’re the people Lincoln had in mind when he said, among other things, you could “confuse some of the people all the time.”

BTW – Have you noticed almost all those confused people are Dems, liberals, and PC’ers?

In surfing around the 'net to see reactions from the Chicken Little Brigade concerning the sea ice revelations, I found a pretty uniform response.

The panic-mongers are saying the record cold that has frozen much of the globe this winter is (are you ready) all caused by (here's the punch line) GLOBAL WARMING.

Yup, that's what the Al Gorists are now saying. The record cold spell is actually caused by global warming which is caused by you and me burning coal and driving our cars. We're killing the polar bears and the sea level is rising. Tigers and lions, and bears, oh my.

If it weren't so pathetic it would be comical.

It sure would be.

Thanks to the commenters who put together a very informed, reasoned and appropriately critical thread.

It puts in sharp relief the ideologically-based Goreish "climate change" blathering we get from so many MSM news orgs.

You say: Yes, weather. I remember when people used to read about it in the Bible. There were floods, droughts, etc.; but no SUV’s or coal-fired plants.

Be careful about bringing the Bible into this. Noah warned people for years about the great flood and most did not listen. They told him he was crazy. I'm not comparing Al Gore to Noah. But I'm cautioning your flip dismissal of those who talk about climate change.

If you crank up your car and close the garage, the fumes will kill you. Now, multiply that effect across the millions of cars burning fossil fuels and pumping exhaust into the atmosphere. How can it possibly be good for the environment?

To the Anon @ 9.36:
Did anyone say engine emissions are good? Gee, I must have missed that.
The point here is that climate change is cyclical and is not anthropogenic (look it up).
As for your analogy of cranking your car up and closing the garage, carbon monoxide is just as dangerous as water under the right circumstances; should we limit access to water?
Our dismissal of the global warming crowd is anything but flippant; they are muddled thinkers and panic-mongers. If they have their way, they would have us back in caves. They want a solution where there is none possible (unless they can alter sun spots).

McCain bent over all right but I'm not so sure it was backward. Steve in New Mexico

More specifically, I believe it's the carbon monoxide component that should kill you first. Otherwise the lack of enough oxygen will cause a terminal condition.

In any case I guess I am at a loss to see what gassing motorists in garages has to do with climate change.

Anon @ 9:36,

Thanks for a civil comment.

That said, I strongly disagree with you.

Other commenters down the thread have very ably responded to what you say.

I'll only add this: When you hear the Goreists talk about "settled science" and seek to silence those who disagree with them thereby, do you ever think of the odious phrase "Jewish science?"

Remember who used it and how?

There's no more reason to embrace Goreist "settled science" than there was to dismiss "Jewish science" in the 1920s or dismiss then Harvard President Larry Summers a few years ago.

Please think about that.

TH,

Bang on.

I should say more but I've been traveling all day and the hour is late.

Steve,

You'll understand this - - -

Given how McCain once served our country I know I'm safe in saying we both agree with your comment but wish it was wrong.

Ken,

You say, "In any case I guess I am at a loss to see what gassing motorists in garages has to do with climate change."

I agree.

But, as propagated by the Dixie Chicks, RFK Jr., and the BBC, everything we do contributes to "climate change."

Or at least everything except flying in private jets and owning multiple homes of 10K+ sq. ft. or more; things the "greenies" don't mention much.

At least I don't hear those things mentioned very much by NPR or the other liberal/leftist news orgs.

Anon @ 9:36 started a fine thread.

Thanks to all of you.

JinC-

On a different note, what do you make of the comments by Obama ("an innocent mistake")and Reid ("a mere hiccup")regarding Treasury Secretary nominee Timothy Geithner's failure to pay some of his income tax over a period of years? When my husband gradually went from working for a corporation to full time work as an independent journalist (there were several years where he had a foot in both camps) our accountant was very clear about what our tax liability was (perhaps Geithner needs his name?)and we paid it (and a hefty liability it was in deed). Just as Kimba Woods and Zoe Baird were done in by their nanny situations because their job as attorny general would be to insure the prosecution of those who fail to follow the nation's laws, so too should Geithner's failure to pay his taxes (or his ignorance that said taxes were due - take your pick of an excuse) disqualify him from the Treasury post since part of his responsibilities involve overseeing the IRS.

To cks:
Don't hold your breath waiting for the GOP to find the courage to stand up against Geithner or Holder. They'll whine and make little "statements," but in the end all the Obama appointments will be approved. I almost upchucked hearing RINO Sen Warner's hagiographic speech welcoming Eric Holder to the hearing this morning.
It won't be long before Obama will have the chance to get some Leftos in the supreme court and, again, the GOP won't oppose any of them.

Dude, where's my Global Warming??
