In Army Leaders of World War II, James B. Sweeney mentions the U. S. Army Air Service's first set of Flying Regulations, which the Service issued at the time of WW I.
Sweeney lists some of the regulations. My favorites:
Don't take the machine into the air unless you are satisfied it will fly.Those regulations were good advice for sure, but also something like telling the spy not to use his cyanide capsule unless he really has to.
If the engine stops, land as soon as you can.
