Leftist Prof wrong about Muslim treatment of gays

University of Michigan Professor Juan Cole, an ardent leftist, devotes a lot of blog time to instructing readers on Muslim culture, which he thinks most Westerners don’t fully appreciate.

Cole posted yesterday on Muslim treatment of gays, saying in part:

Modern homosexual identity has only slowly emerged in the Middle East, and has sometimes faced great hostility.

I say sometimes because real-life Muslim societies are not as puritanical as outsiders or local elites imagine. It is obvious that American writer Paul Bowles liked living in Tangiers precisely because anything went as long as it stayed fairly private.

In cosmopolitan Muslim cultures like Egypt, at best the modern gay subculture is winked at, but sometimes there are crackdowns. The situation resembles the US in, say, the 1930s and 1940s, when the police would arrest gays. (bold added by JinC)
Gateway Pundit didn’t let Cole’s pernicious nonsense pass. Among other things, GP cites some reports for Cole. Excerpts:
In Egypt five men were sentenced in March 2002 to three years in prison with hard labor for engaging in gay sex, judicial officials said.
Islam prohibits homosexuality and, although not explicitly referred to in the Egyptian penal code, a wide range of laws covering obscenity, prostitution and debauchery are applied to homosexuals.

In 2001, in Cairo, 52 men were tried by an Emergency State Security Court on charges of immoral behavior and contempt of religion after police raided a Nile boat restaurant and accused them of taking part in a gay sex party.

Twenty-three were convicted and sentenced to up to five years in prison. The rest were acquitted
Gateway Pundit also called Cole’s attention to numerous other imprisonments and floggings of gays in Muslim countries, as well as the public hanging last July of two teenagers in Iran for what the government said was the “crime” of homosexuality.

GP provides links to all the incidents he cites. He also links to sites listing countries that explicitly condemn homosexuality.

You can read all of GP's fact-based refutation of Cole’s nonsense here.

Why do so many American leftists deny, rationalize or ignore entirely the imprisonments, floggings and executions of gays in many Muslim countries?

John, to some degree the professor is correct. Muslim men need women for procreation, boys and animals for pleasure. Though not universal, it is very common. The punishment of gays usually is the excuse when they have no other charge to levy. Else there would be damn few muslim men left in the middle east.

The prohibition of homosexuality is a tenet of Islamic law. It is largely ignored for men. Not always, but when it does draw action, if one looks deep enough, one usually finds another reason.

I have no objective proofs of this, only observation. However, having said the above, a non-muslim homosexual would be executed forthwith, after being sadistically used if possible.

I think the explanation is easier than that, SA.

See, most of the countries Cole defends hate America (as is) even more than he does.

The thing that makes Cole a fool is that the America he wants is diametrically opposed to the one they want.

But I suppose he thinks he can feed the rest of us to the crocodile and enjoy his future.

AC, I wasn't defending Cole, just pointing out the hypocrisy that is Islam.
