Blogging resumes Sunday night

There are many family and friends here for the weekend.

Blogging will resume Sunday night around 8 pm with another letter to The Chronicle's Editorial Board. This one responds to The Chronicle's concerns about how I and a few other bloggers' have reacted to statements by certain Duke faculty. I hope you'll be "listening" to what I say.

I'll also have a post concerning aspects of the Raleigh News & Observer's Duke lacrosse coverage that deserve more attention than they've received.

More posts will follow including a "look" at former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and his chances of winning the GOP's 2008 presidential nomination.

I hope you all enjoy the rest of Thanksgiving and the weekend.

Happy Thanksgiving, John. Why do think Melanie Sill still hasn't apologized for the N&O's fundamentally misleading coverage of March 24 and 25?

Anon @ 3:43 pm,

Thanks for the holiday wish.

Most of the time I concentrate on what's wrong with N&O coverage.

I also often ask the paper to correct errors and acknowledge important omissions.

In the case of the Duke Hoax, I've said at JinC and at the N&O's Editors' Blog that the paper should apologize for much of its coverage.

In the case of the Mar. 25 story, I've said the story is so riddled with errors and reflects such poor, if not downright unethical, journalism that the paper should retract the story. It should then run another front page story explaining everything that is wrong with the Mar. 25 story which set the template for the "Duke lacrosse scandal" which included inflammatory reporting that put the entire team's safety at risk and helped make possible the frame-up of three innocent young men.

That correction story should be accompanied by front page apologies. The first, obviously, should be to the players and their families. But the N&O’s readers and the community are also owed an apology.

Reasonably fair and responsible reporting by the N&O on Mar. 25 and afterwards would have very likely prevented much of the enormous harm that’s been done to so many innocent people.

Reasonably fair and responsible reporting would have made our community better informed and more able to act on our strengths instead of dangerously misinformed.

Now why won’t the N&O take those steps? I don’t know.

But I’m going to keep pressing the matters we’re discussing here.

Now, back to the family.

I see your comments here and elsewhere.
